The month of June is celebrated as LGBTQ Pride month worldwide. It is a month of acceptance, understanding and taking pride in your identity! As the world moves forward, albeit slowly, the time is apt for all organizations to recognize and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, encourage their participation and support them.

We are a young organization. There is a long road ahead for us. As we chart that road, it is important for us to lay the groundwork to become the organization that we aspire to be. “Inclusion and Diversity” is one of the key guardrails that will guide our way in this endeavour. And we are committed to creating a safe space for members of the LGBTQ+ community, at a systemic, infrastructural, and cultural level. As of this year, we’ve begun to take conscious, and cautious, steps on the road to building a Ninjacart that is safe and accepting for you, regardless of your identity.
With this blog, we try to address the concerns and answer the questions you might have regarding your career and future at Ninjacart. (If this blog does not answer your question, you can always reach out to queries@ninjacart.com with your questions.)
Do factors like gender and sexuality matter when Ninjacart is hiring?
We wish we could say with a 100% conviction that they don’t, but we know that due to unconscious biases and social conditioning, they do. But we’re making conscious efforts to change that.
Like every other startup, we are constantly evolving. We are working very hard to make sure that factors like gender or sexuality are absolutely inconsequential when it comes to hiring. We have an understanding and supportive leadership, who feel the same way. We see ourselves getting there sooner rather than later.
Is Ninjacart working to make the workplace more inclusive?
Absolutely. This is an area we are putting conscious and heavy efforts into, every day. Whatever is lacking is only due to simple ignorance, but we are working towards changing that. We are learning and sensitizing ourselves.
In the last 6 months, we have made very noticeable changes in the gender ratio at the organization. We are slowly working towards improving in other areas also.
What policies have Ninjacart established regarding anti-discrimination and anti-harassment?
All Ninjacart employees are protected from discrimination and harassment through policies as mandated by the government of India. Discrimination of any kind based on race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status such as disability, age, marital and family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, health status, place of residence, economic and social situation, are not tolerated.
We have established POSH laws to protect individuals, of any orientation, from sexual harassment. We also have an anonymous reporting portal where employees can report their issues confidentially.
What are the plans in the pipeline to create acceptance for diversity, at an organizational level?
While we work on building a workplace which is accepting of all, no matter what gender, race, colour, background, or religion they belong to, we are giving a lot of attention to areas which are relatively harder to integrate, like disability and sexual orientation. The plans include sensitizing the workplace towards various groups so that we are all well aware and sensitive towards their needs, however different they may be.
We are also conducting internal programs to make diversity a norm by educating our employees about it. We are making sure that our employees are able to talk about their issues openly, without the fear of any repercussions. We have put together groups that support women, and LGBTQ employees and lead change.
What should the LGBTQ community keep in mind before applying to Ninjacart?
As an organisation, we are completely indifferent towards the sexual orientation of whoever works here. However, as individuals, even the most woke of us tend to unknowingly make mistakes. A stray remark here, or an outdated joke there.
We can’t promise that such events will never occur. But we can guarantee that it would not be intentional.
And that such events will be followed by education and sensitization of the individual in the wrong. As a workplace, we will leave no stone unturned to acknowledge, accept, and respect the LGBTQ community, just as we would anyone else. We are working hard to ensure they do not get any differential treatment, either positive or negative.
Are any training/educational workshops being organized/planned to sensitize the workers?
Yes. As we grow and mature, there are multiple seminars and workshops planned for teams to understand what diversity and inclusion mean. We organized a workshop by the soft skills trainer, Snigdha Pal, to raise awareness on the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. We aim to educate ourselves on the unconscious behaviours and attitudes toward the community and challenge narratives, myths, stereotypes, and misconceptions we have about the individuals from the LGBTQ+ community.
In conclusion, we would like to reassert our commitment to Inclusion and Diversity. It is one of the most important line items for us as we transform the culture of the organization. We believe that talent is not a component of things like gender, and body, but what is within you. And we want only the best talent to join us!
