28th November 2021. Chennai.
The persistent rains that started on the first of November had not stopped yet. The Depression BOB 05 and a low-pressure system associated with the Northeast monsoon created conditions for the incessant rains that inundated many parts of Chennai.
With roads submerged and motor mobility becoming near impossible in many areas, much of the Chennai populace was left stranded in their homes. With no electricity and food supplies running out, the panic was beginning to set in. Even the retailers were short on the stock of fruits & veggies. Neither tempos nor trucks could come to deliver in the flood in many places.
In the Perumbakkam area of Chennai, Mr Kumaresan, the owner of Ganesh Store, was getting anxious. The last batch of supplies for his store had come a day before. He could only fulfil a handful of orders before he would be forced to deny today’s orders, as he wouldn’t have enough stock left.
The Idea
In the Ninjacart MDC office in Chennai, the last-mile team was huddled in a spot discussing how to tackle the problem of deliveries in this unprecedented situation. They had a stock of fresh produce which had come the night before but, overnight, the area had flooded. Any motor vehicle could not get near the MDC now.
This was a problem. Over 1 Ton of fresh produce rested in the MDC waiting to be delivered. While sipping tea and brainstorming ideas on tackling this situation, one of the executives came up with a simple idea. An idea so simple and elegant that everyone was immediately ‘onboard’ with it. The idea was to make deliveries using boats. They made a few calls, to their managers, the sales team and a few fishermen. Within an hour, a boat arrived to onboard Ninjacart’s crates full of fresh vegetables, and fruits.
The executives loaded the crates on the boat and rowed it to higher land, where a truck awaited them. Once loaded, the crates were promptly delivered to the retailers. With quick thinking and a ‘go above and beyond’ approach, the Ninjacart team delivered up to 1 Ton of fresh produce to retailers in Chennai.
Mr. Kumaresan was informed by our sales executives about the situation by then and when we reached his store with his supply, he was very appreciative of the efforts our team had put in.
